🪔 Pre-Wedding Rituals

1. Jurun
A pre-wedding ritual where the groom’s family visits the bride’s home and gifts her wedding attire (mekhela chador), jewelry, sweets, and cosmetics. The mother of the groom applies haldi (turmeric) on the bride.

2. Tel Diya
The groom’s mother sends a symbolic offering of oil and turmeric to the bride, to be applied before the bath on the wedding day for purification and glow.

3. Pani Tula
Holy water is fetched by the bride’s family from a nearby water body with Vedic mantras, used for her ceremonial bath.

4. Nuoni/Nuoni-Nuwa
Both bride and groom are given a traditional bath at their respective homes. Women sing Biya Naam (folk songs) during the ritual.

5. Nikaah Aagam or Barat Arrival
The groom arrives at the bride’s home or wedding venue, often accompanied by traditional drummers (Dhol and Pepas). He is welcomed with aarti and gamocha (Assamese towel).

6. Madhu Boron
The bride’s mother welcomes the groom with honey and curd and blesses him.

7. Wedding Attire & Preparation
The bride wears the mekhela chador gifted during Jurun, typically in white and gold, adorned with traditional Assamese jewelry.

8. Kanyadaan & Vivah Sanskar

• The bride’s father gives her hand to the groom while Vedic mantras are recited.
• Lord Vishnu is invoked as the eternal witness.
• The couple takes vows (Saptapadi) around the sacred fire.

9. Biya Naam & Ashirbaad
The wedding is concluded with Biya Naam sung by elderly women, and the couple seeks blessings from all elders.

10. Bidaai (Bride’s Farewell)
An emotional ritual as the bride departs with her husband to his home.

11. Ghor Gosoka or Grihapravesh
The bride is welcomed at the groom’s house. She kicks a pot of rice at the entrance, symbolizing abundance and prosperity.

12. Naam Kirtan & Family Feast
The couple participates in a Naam Kirtan or devotional singing, followed by a community feast.
